Maciej Tworek studied piano under Jan Hoffman and choral studies and conducting under Józef Radwan at the Academy of Music in Cracow. He has participated in masterclasses led by such conductors as Helmuth Rilling, Roger Norrington and Kurt Masur. He has worked as assistant conductor to Valery Gergiev and Lorin Maazel. In 2005–2012, Maciej Tworek conducted the Capella Cracoviensis. Lecturer at the Academy of Music in Cracow.
In 2002, he began a conducting collaboration with Krzysztof Penderecki, which resulted in numerous projects, including the recording of Penderecki’s complete symphonies and instrumental concertos with the Sinfonia Iuventus orchestra, conducting the Violin Concerto No. 2 ‘Metamorphosen’ with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin in 2018 (as part of celebrations of the composer’s 85th birthday) and the ensuing tour of China with Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra.
Maciej Tworek has performed in Europe, Asia and both North and South Americas, conducting the Hilliard Ensemble, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Dresdner Philharmonie, NDR Radiophilharmonie, MDR Sinfonieorchester, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, New Russia State Symphony Orchestra (an event accompanying the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics), Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela, Coro Sinfónico Nacional Juvenil de Venezuela, Orquesta Filarmόnica de Bogotá, KBS Symphony Orchestra (South Korea), Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven Academy Orchestra, the majority of philharmonic ensembles in Poland and the philharmonic ensembles in Ostrava, Brno and Astana.
In 2019, Maciej Tworek conducted two important concerts featuring Krzysztof Penderecki’s music: Polish Requiem on 1 September 2019, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War, and the Korean premiere of St Luke Passion at the Seoul International Music Festival in October 2019.
