EXHIBITION: Alternative Music. Speculative histories of music

November 8 @ 08:00 - December 1 @ 17:00

The “Alternative Music” exhibition presents speculative, alt-historical scenarios for the development of music, standing in contrast to a hierarchical vision of cultural progress, in which we consider current musical conventions – paraphrasing Leibniz – to be “the best possible music.” Visitors will be taken on a journey beginning in Neanderthal caves, continuing through the Inca plateaus to the closer Baroque, prompting reflection not only on history, but also on the future directions of musical culture.

The narrative axis of the exhibition is a reflection on the evolution of music perceived as an organic, undirected process, resulting from the culmination of often completely random events and processes occurring at the cultural, geopolitical, ecological or even anthropological level. The aim of the exhibition is to make the audience reflect on the musical status quo and shake off the rather common belief in hierarchical progress in this field in which contemporary music, with its instrumentation. is seen as the final and most perfect product of a directed, almost teleological process, in which what is old qualitatively gives way to what is modern. In order to break the audience out of its routine thinking about musical progress, while at the same time subscribing to the main slogan of the Festival, which is “early music”, but going beyond the conventional framework of this notion, somewhat perversely and provocatively we will present three alternative, speculative scenarios for the development of music, manifested through three instruments – artifacts from times gone by… Each artifact will be a contribution to the telling of an alternative story. In addition to the object itself placed on an appropriate pedestal, a board with text/graphics/drawings explaining the alternative situational context for the creation of a particular instrument and audio/video material demonstrating the sonic character of the instrument will be present. In addition, the exhibition space will also include a board with a text on the overall idea and speculative methodology, highlighting the evolutionary, undirected nature of the development of music and instruments.
