The Polish Radio Choir at the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music in Lusławice is one of the best vocal ensembles in Poland. Composed of recognised vocalists – young people, full of energy and unlimited imagination – and experienced singers navigating the difficult vocal art with perfection and finesse.
Founded in 1948, for 75 years the choir has been performing a repertoire that includes both a cappella music and vocal and instrumental forms. Not only does the ensemble draw on the rich history of choral music, but it is also constantly in search of new means of expression – reaching for the traditions of various styles and eras, the choir confronts them with its own vision of artistic language and its original, signature sound in a creative and modern way.
The choir participates in performances exploring the relationship between sound, body and space, interpretations of traditional songs or pre-classical pieces as well as performances of complex melodic and harmonic structures. Moreover, the choir has experience in the field of jazz music.
A particularly important area of the choir’s activity is 20th-century Polish music – it has premiered works by the most significant contemporary composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutosławski, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Wojciech Kilar. The ensemble also cooperates with creators of Polish contemporary music. In recent years, they have included, among others, Agata Zubel, Aleksander Kościów, Paweł Łukaszewski, Andrzej Kwieciński, Szymon Godziemba-Trytek, Aleksander Nowak and Paweł Mykietyn.
The Polish Radio Choir in Lusławice takes part in numerous festivals in Poland and abroad. The ensemble regularly cooperates with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw, the New Music Orchestra, the Beethoven Academy Orchestra or the Sinfonietta Cracovia orchestra. Maria Piotrowska-Bogalecka is currently the artistic director of the ensemble.
